Ima­gi­ne a lar­ge fac­to­ry hall. Tra­di­tio­nal­ly, the machi­nes run on their own. To check their con­di­ti­on, an employee has to go and have a look.

IoT deve­lo­p­ment ser­vices are buil­ding the digi­tal ner­vous sys­tem for this fac­to­ry:

1. The ner­ve endings (sen­sors): Each machi­ne is equip­ped with sen­sors that mea­su­re data such as tem­pe­ra­tu­re, vibra­ti­on or pro­duc­tion volu­me.
2. The ner­ve pathways (con­nec­ti­vi­ty): The data is sent to a cen­tral brain via wire­less tech­no­lo­gies (such as WLAN, 5G, LoRa­WAN).
3. The brain (IoT plat­form): Cen­tral soft­ware (often in the cloud) recei­ves, stores and ana­ly­zes the­se huge amounts of data in real time.
4. The refle­xes (actions): The brain can trig­ger actions. If a machi­ne gets too hot, it sends a war­ning to a tech­ni­ci­an (pre­dic­ti­ve main­ten­an­ce) or even swit­ches the machi­ne off auto­ma­ti­cal­ly.

IoT enables com­ple­te­ly new busi­ness models. A machi­ne manu­fac­tu­rer no lon­ger just sells a machi­ne, but a gua­ran­teed pro­duc­tion time. A far­mer moni­tors the soil mois­tu­re in his fields from his desk. The pos­si­bi­li­ties are end­less.
